Louisiana Lottery Players Win Big During Historic Powerball Drawing

More than 116,000 Louisiana Lottery players won cash prizes during the historic $758.7 million Powerball drawing on Aug. 23, including one $2 million match-5 + Power Play winner, for a total of more than $3.5 million in prize money, including more than $2.8 million won by purchasing Power Play. One ticket sold in Massachusetts won the jackpot, which was the second largest in U.S. history and the largest ever won by a single winning ticket. The winning numbers were 06-07-16-23-26 and the Powerball number was 04.

 

Louisiana’s $2 million-winning Powerball ticket was purchased at Tiger Mart on Highway 26 in Lake Arthur, matching all five white ball numbers but missing the red Powerball number. The store will receive a bonus of $20,000, which is 1 percent of the prize, for selling the ticket. The ticket was one of six $2 million winning tickets sold in the entire U.S. for the drawing. 

 

In addition, there were five Powerball tickets sold in Louisiana that matched four of the five white ball numbers and the Powerball number to win $50,000, including two in which the Power Play option was added, quadrupling the prizes to $200,000 when the 4X multiplier was selected during the drawing.

Players should sign the back of their ticket immediately after purchasing for security purposes and treat their tickets like cash. After the drawing, winners have 180 days to claim their prizes. Louisiana Lottery retailers are required to pay prizes of $50 or less and are strongly encouraged to pay prizes of up to $600. Prizes of more than $600 must be claimed at a Lottery office; Powerball prizes of more than $510,000 must be claimed at the Lottery’s headquarters in Baton Rouge.

 

Over $7.5 million worth of Powerball tickets were sold in Louisiana for the week beginning Sunday, Aug. 20 with over $5.2 million on Wednesday alone. Louisiana Lottery sales for the entire jackpot run, which began June 14, totaled a whopping $27.9 million.

 

At least 35 percent of all Louisiana Lottery ticket sales, including Powerball, is transferred to the state and dedicated to the Minimum Foundation Program, which funds public education in Louisiana.

 

The Powerball jackpot was last hit June 10. During the entire run, Louisiana produced one $2 million winner and 16 winners of the $50,000 prize level, including one who purchased the Power Play option and multiplied their prize to $250,000, three who multiplied their prizes to $200,000, one who multiplied their prize to $150,000, and one other who multiplied their prize to $100,000.

 

In addition to more than 70 Powerball millionaires, Louisiana has had 15 Powerball jackpot winners since joining the game in 1995. The most recent was on May 25, 2013, claimed by The Williams Trust of New Orleans which split a $50 million jackpot with two other winning tickets sold in Delaware and Florida.
