BATON ROUGE – The third quarter of the fiscal year brought over $44 million to Louisiana’s Minimum Foundation Program (MFP), which dedicates its funds to K–12 public education. This builds on the Lottery’s milestone of surpassing $5 billion in all-time state transfers, a strong result given the absence of the historic multi-state jackpot runs that boosted last quarter’s figures.
The variance in transfer amount directly reflects last quarter’s large multi-state jackpot runs, with a $983 million Mega Millions jackpot in November and a $1.8 billion Powerball jackpot in December, as well as annual holiday scratch-offs which are popular with players.
“Every ticket sold is an investment in Louisiana’s students and classrooms,” said Lottery President Rose Hudson. “This quarter’s transfer of over $44 million to the Minimum Foundation Program is a testament to the Lottery’s enduring commitment to public education — and with our 35th anniversary scratch-offs and a historic eleven $1 million-plus Powerball winners in April, we’re excited about the momentum heading into the fourth quarter.”
With revenue of $148,554,293, the Lottery’s total third-quarter state transfers equaled $44,152,887. Since the Lottery began operations in 1991, more than $14.2 billion in revenue has been generated, primarily from ticket sales. Over $5 billion has been transferred to the state treasury to support K–12 public education, representing about 35% of total revenue.
Retailers remain a key part of the Lottery’s success. Retail partners earn a 5% sales commission on every ticket sale.
Lottery ticket purchasers must be at least 21 years of age. Anyone with a gambling problem, or friends of anyone with a gambling problem, is encouraged to call toll-free 1-877-770-7867 for assistance. For security purposes, players should sign the back of their tickets after purchasing.
