Lottery Legacy – JONG’s

JONG’s is a small grocery store in Lake Providence that has been serving its community since 1948. The store was started by current store manager Chad Toney’s grandfather, who passed it down to his kids before Chad took over the business a few years ago.

Customers can enjoy a delicious lunch from their deli, get great deals on grocery items, and pick up their favorite Lottery tickets.

“I see a lot of the same people every day,” he said. “They play the same numbers and eat the same thing for breakfast. There’s one lady who writes me a check every day for the same amount,” he laughed.

These regular customers help the JONG’s team feel more connected to the community.

“Getting people in the store is half the battle, and the Lottery helps with that,” he said.

There are also customers who visit the store specifically for Lottery tickets, which allows Chad and his team to connect with people they likely wouldn’t have connected with otherwise; and many of those Lottery customers will also buy a few other things in the store, allowing for more turnover.

Lake Providence is a small town, so the excitement of new Lottery scratch-offs, and the store’s Lottery wins, quickly becomes the hot topic of the day.

“Since I’ve been in charge, we’ve had a few thousand-dollar winners on scratch-off tickets,” he said. “It’s always exciting to sell a winning ticket.”

There’s been a great working relationship between JONG’s and their local Lottery sales representative over the years. Their team and customers get excited to see the new scratch-offs and the regular refresh of those tickets. They also like the increase of in-store promotions hosted by the Lottery and hope to host one at JONG’s in the future.

“We have a good relationship with the Lottery, so I hope to continue to see consistent growth moving forward.”
