BATON ROUGE – For the third quarter of fiscal year 2023, the Louisiana Lottery Corporation transferred nearly $55.4 million to the state treasury, about $7.7 million more than the same quarter last year and exceeding budgeted transfers by over $5.8 million.

“Sales for the third quarter were strong, thanks to a boost from the excitement generated by the $1.35 billion Mega Millions jackpot hit in January and players’ continued interest in our diverse portfolio of scratch-off games, that now includes a $20 price point,” said Lottery President Rose Hudson. “The Lottery is on track to having its best year ever and will work to ensure a strong fourth quarter finish.”

With revenue of $167,258,763 the Lottery’s total third-quarter state transfers were $55,360,704, bringing total fiscal year-to-date transfers to $168,737,736. Since the Lottery began operations in 1991, it has brought in more than $12.7 billion in revenue and transferred more than $4.5 billion to the state treasury.

Retailers earn 5% sales commission, plus incentives for cashing winning tickets and bonuses for selling big winning tickets. For January through March of 2023, retailer compensation totaled nearly $9.4 million, bringing total fiscal-year-to-date retailer earnings to almost $28.3 million.

Over the last couple of years, the Lottery began adjusting scratch-off game prize structures, increasing prize payouts, adding more higher price-point games and launching new types of games. This strategy has been well received by players, resulting in net gains for the state.
