Louisiana Lottery Transfers More Than $42.5 Million to State for First Quarter of Fiscal Year
BATON ROUGE – For the first quarter of fiscal year 2025, the Louisiana Lottery Corporation transferred more than $42.5 million to the state treasury, down about $12.1 million from the same quarter last year in which a $1 billion Powerball jackpot and a $1.5 billion Mega Million jackpot both occurred.
“The lack of large Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots in recent months significantly impacted our first-quarter sales,” said Lottery President Rose Hudson. “While scratch-off sales have remained strong, the influence of big jackpots on sales is undeniable. These substantial prizes generate excitement and increase player engagement, which boosts our overall performance; however, their occurrence is unpredictable over short periods of time.”
With revenue of $141,331,775, the Lottery’s total first-quarter state transfers were $42,523,506. Since the Lottery began operations in 1991, nearly $13.7 billion in revenue has been generated, primarily from ticket sales. Over $4.8 billion has been transferred to the state treasury to support K-12 public education, amounting to about 35% of total revenue.
Retailers earn 5% sales commission, plus incentives for cashing players’ winning tickets and bonuses for selling big winning tickets. For July through September of 2024, retailer compensation totaled almost $7.9 million.
“The Lottery is making plans now for even more player-centered games and value-added promotions to keep our customers entertained while also raising funds for K-12 public education,” noted Hudson. “This quarter, we will be rooting on our national finalist in the NASCAR Powerball Playoff Promotion for a chance to win $1 million and welcoming our Saints Second-Chance Drawing winners to premium experiences in Caesar’s Superdome!”
Lottery ticket purchasers must be at least 21 years of age. Anyone with a gambling problem, or friends of anyone with a gambling problem, is encouraged to call toll-free 1-877-770-7867 for assistance. For security purposes, players should sign the back of their tickets after purchasing.
