BATON ROUGE – A Thibodaux man’s decades-long commitment to playing the Louisiana Lottery has finally paid off in a big way. Gerald Morrison recently claimed a $100,000 prize from the July 9 Powerball drawing, marking a major milestone for the longtime lottery enthusiast.
Morrison purchased the winning ticket from A-1 Farms, a retailer located on Highway 70 Spur in Plattenville. The store has become a familiar stop for him over the years, and staff there not only recognize him by name but also recall his preferred set of numbers. On this occasion, Morrison included the Power Play option for an additional $1, effectively doubling his $50,000 prize to $100,000.
As is his routine, Morrison tucked the ticket away and went about his day. It wasn’t until the evening of Friday, July 25, that the life-changing news came to light. His wife, Janelle, noticed the ticket was still posted on their refrigerator and decided to check the numbers. As she read each one aloud, she realized her husband had matched four of the five white-ball numbers as well as the red Powerball number.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Morrison said. “You always hope for a win like this, but I never really thought I’d hit $100,000 in my lifetime.”
Morrison shared that he plans to use part of his winnings to purchase a new truck, a goal he has had for some time. He also intends to set aside a portion of the prize for his two grandchildren, who were equally excited about the unexpected windfall.
The Louisiana Lottery encourages all players to sign the back of their tickets immediately after purchase to protect their claim. Winning tickets for draw-style games must be claimed within 180 days of the drawing date.
“We always love seeing our loyal players win big,” said Rose Hudson, Lottery President.” Mr. Morrison’s story is a great reminder that any ticket has the potential to change your life.”
To play Powerball, participants must be at least 21 years of age. Individuals experiencing gambling-related problems, or those concerned about a friend or family member, are urged to call the Louisiana Problem Gamblers Helpline at 1-877-770-7867. Assistance is confidential and available 24/7.
