Albertha Matthews of St. Gabriel had just completed her school-year job in food service and was looking for summer employment when she won $10,000 from the May 24 Louisiana Lottery Powerball drawing.

"This prize will give me a summer vacation, too!"  exclaimed the 50-year-old school system worker. Matthews said she also plans to help her daughter pay for a new car and to "spoil her grandchildren a little" with her winnings.

Using spare change left over from her shopping, Matthews purchased a Powerball ticket for the May 24 drawing.  As she sat on her bed that evening checking her numbers on TV, she started to shake once she realized that her ticket had matched four of the five white ball numbers drawn plus the red Powerball number.

"I watch for the winning numbers every night," explained Matthews.  "I was by myself when I saw that I had won and I had to tell somebody, so I called my daughter, who was on a date."

Matthews, whose ticket was a "quick pick," said she regularly purchases her tickets at Yousef Quick Stop on Highway 75 in Carville.  "I went in and told the owner 'you sold a winning ticket, and you are looking at the winner!'"

The winning numbers for the May 24 Powerball drawing were 33-40-41-51-52 and the Powerball number was 6. Players have 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim draw-style game prizes.
