BATON ROUGE – Excitement is in the air at Shop Rite #78 on North University Avenue in Lafayette after their store sold a $2 million winning Powerball with Power Play ticket for the July 5 drawing.
After matching all five white ball numbers selected during the July 5 drawing and adding the Power Play option for the chance to multiply any non-jackpot winnings, Fermon Bonin of Carencro won the $2 million prize. He claimed his prize on Tuesday, July 8, taking home $1,460,000 after state and federal tax withholdings.
He came just one number shy of winning the $192.4 million Powerball jackpot. The winning numbers for the July 5 drawing were 01-28-34-50-58, with Powerball number 08.
“I could hardly sleep,” said cashier Kim Prejean when she learned about the sale. The store will receive a selling bonus of $20,000, or 1% of the prize.
Lottery ticket purchasers must be at least 21 years of age. Anyone who may have a gambling problem or friends and family of anyone with a gambling problem should call toll free 1-877-770-7867 for help.
For security purposes, the Lottery strongly encourages players to sign the back of their tickets immediately after purchasing. Draw-style tickets must be claimed within 180 days of the drawing.
