When Laura Verdin of Dulac checked the Aug. 27 winning Powerball numbers in the newspaper, she was surprised to discover that the single Powerball ticket she purchased at Cannata's Family Market was a $10,000 winner.

"I was so shocked! I bought one Powerball ticket. I checked the numbers with the newspaper, and my blood pressure went sky high," explained Verdin. "I've been buying tickets since the Lottery started!"

Verdin's ticket matched four of the five white ball numbers drawn and the red Powerball number to win $10,000. The winning numbers for the Aug. 27 drawing were 02-12-25-54-58, and the Powerball number was 14.

Verdin purchased her winning ticket from Cannata's Family Market on Prospect Boulevard in Houma. She plans to use her winnings to buy a new pair of eyeglasses, a new refrigerator and a new air conditioner.
