Power Play Changes Coming to Powerball Jan. 22
On Jan. 22, 2014, the Power Play add-on option for the multistate jackpot game Powerball will change to involve a multiplier for certain prize levels, according to the Louisiana Lottery which is a member of the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) that manages the game. For an additional $1 per play, Power Play can be added to a player's Powerball tickets for the chance to increase any nonjackpot prize won.
Beginning with the Wednesday, Jan. 22 drawing, the current fixed Power Play prizes will be replaced by prizes that depend upon a multiplier of 2, 3, 4 or 5, randomly selected during the drawing, for determining Power Play prizes for the bottom seven Powerball prize tiers. For example, the regular Powerball prize for matching four white-ball numbers, plus the red Powerball number is $10,000. If the Power Play is purchased and the multiplier 5 is selected during the drawing, the new prize would be $50,000.
The multiplier will not apply to the match-5 prize; instead the Powerball with Power Play prize will remain at its current $2 million, which is double the base prize amount.
"When Powerball changed back in 2012 to its current structure, the Power Play multiplier was removed in favor of set replacement prizes," explained Lottery President Rose Hudson. "Players let us know they much prefer the excitement of using a random multiplier to determine these prizes."
Power Play does not apply to the jackpot prize. The Powerball base game and drawing are not changing. Powerball will still cost $2 per play, and the cost of adding Power Play remains $1 per play.
In order to prepare for changes to Power Play, the Lottery will temporarily and progressively suspend the multidraw option on Powerball beginning Nov. 13, 2013, according to the following schedule:
